Each figurine is sculpted with intricate detail by hand. |
Owner, Gary Meidinger, wears jewelers glasses to inspect a miniature sculpt. |
Before production a painted sample is made and sent to Prizm inc. for approval. |
Sketch The artist always begins with a sketch. Actually many sketches are usually produced before the artist is satisfied with their design, making sure that the image will express their vision.
Color Artwork Once the sketches have been approved by Prizm inc., the final color artwork is painted. The artist provides the sculptors with not only the front, full color work of the image, but also the side and back images. Sometimes a color swatch sample sheet is also provided for the painting studio to use and follow.
Sculpting The sculptors bring the flat artwork to life with the finest sculpted detail in a three dimensional format. Each sketched or painted angle and view provided by the artist, assist them in sculpting the figurine to best represent the original work. Once the sculpture is done, pictures are sent to both Prizm inc and the artist for any comments and corrects before approval.
Sampling Once the sculpture is approved by both Prizm inc and the artist, then the mold making begins. The sculpt is enclosed inside of a wooden box, silicone is cast over and around the entire clay sculpt. When the silicone is completely cured, which takes 4-8 hours, a scalpel is used to cut away from the sculpt and a negative image of the original sculpt remains. Unfortunately, the original clay sculpt is destroyed in the process of making the Master Mold.
Production First the casting is done of the wonderful and intricate details of the figurine. A mixture of resin and marble powder is blended to create a material which is poured into the master mold. The molds are filled with a liquid resin mixture. It only takes 6-10 minutes for the mixture to be cured and then another 30 minutes to be hardened. Then the mold is placed inside a vacuum to remove any air bubbles from the materials. Eventually, the figure is ready to be removed from the mold and placed in to a gentle wash of soda water.
The figure is known as the white body and each one is inspected for defects in the castings. Each white body is cleaned and polished to enhance the final product. Once the white body is completely processed, inspected and approved, it moves into the painting phase. The painting is done one by one so that each figure is unique. The details of the painting require a steady hand and very good eyes. The most talented workers are the ones that decorate the faces and the eyes. After all the hands painted details are applied, a final touch of air brushed pink is added to give the figures that blushed and alive look.
Quality control Quality control is very important at every stage of the process. Strict checks are carried out so that everything is produced with high quality standards. Each figure is given very close inspection by quality control experts. Any blemished are marked for further work. All figurines are then packed in styro-foam and inserted into beautiful gift boxes.
The Product It is truly a dedicated team effort from the artist to the artisans and then to the store owner who purchases the figurines, so, you, the consumer can purchase and ultimately enjoy the merchandise.
